What a great way to spend the first day of summer. The second annual Hawthorn Woods 5k/10k will start and finish at Heritage Oaks Park in Hawthorn Woods. Bring along the entire family as there is plenty to do at the park while the race is in progress.
A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit the Hawthorn Woods Women's Club, a local non for profit, that serves women and children in Lake County. To learn more, please go to www.hwwc.info.
New USATF certified course for 2009. The course will begin and end at Heritage Oaks Park while the majority of the course will go through the Hawthorn Woods Country Club. Detailed course directions are below. View Map.
- Start at East end of Heritage Oaks Park on Tournament Drive East.
- If you are familiar with the park, this is by the last baseball field and the playground.
- Head West on Tournament Drive East to Tournament Drive South (veer right)
- Tournament Drive South to To Tournament Drive South and Open Pkwy South (veer right and stay on Tournament Drive South).
- Follow Tournament Drive South to Open Pkwy North.
- This is where 5k/10k course split. See separate course descriptions below.
5k
1. Turn left on Open Pkwy North
2. Follow Open Pkwy North to Open Pkwy South
3. Follow Open Pkwy South to Tournament Drive South (turn right)
4. Follow Tournament Drive South back to Heritage Oaks Park.
5. Participants will cross into the Park area and onto the walking path that circles the lake at the pavillion near the soccer fields at the West end of the park.
6. Complete one counter-clockwise loop on the path and finish at the pavilion near the soccer fields at the West end of the park.
10k
7. Continue straight on Tournament Drive South to Schwerman Rd.
8. Cross over Schwerman Rd onto Tournament Drive North.
9. Follow Tournament Drive North to a turnaround point roughly 50 feet past Eagle Ridge Drive.
10. After completing turnaround on Tournament Drive North, turn right onto Eagle Ridge Drive.
11. Follow Eagle Ridge Drive to Championship Pkwy (turn left)
12. Follow Championship Pkwy to Tournament Drive North (turn right)
13. Follow Tournament Drive North to Schwerman Rd.
14. Cross over Schwerman Rd onto Tournament Drive South.
15. Follow Tournament Drive South to Open Pkwy North. (turn right).
16. Follow steps 2 through 6 of the 5k course description above to the finish.

$50 Gift certificates from Dick's Sporting Goods will be awarded to top overall male and female finishers for both the 5k and 10k events.
Awards will also be given to top 3 male and female finishers, depending on number of participants, for the following age groups: 9 and under, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65 and over.

From the East
- Exit I-94 at Half Day Rd. Go West on Half Day Rd to Old McHenry Rd (turn right). Old McHenry Rd. to Midlothian Rd (turn right). Midlothian Rd to Kruckenberg Rd (turn left). Continue straight for about 0.3 miles to the baseball fields. Shelter and race staging area will be on the left.
From the West
- Rt. 12 (Rand Rd) to Old McHenry Rd. Go East on Old McHenry Rd. Old McHenry Rd. to Fairfield Rd (turn left). Take Fairfield Rd for about 1 mile to Heritage Oaks Park entrance (turn right). Continue straight for about 0.5 miles to the baseball fields. Shelter and race staging area will be on the right.
